The Breath of Kursaal
For generations, Palazzo Kursaal has stood as one of Grottammare's defining landmarks—a place where architecture, culture and community have come together beside the Adriatic Sea. Andrea's vision is not simply to reopen a historic restaurant, but to breathe new life into it, transforming it into a destination where people naturally gather throughout the day and into the evening.
This concept interprets that vision as a single poetic gesture: the sea breeze entering the hall.
The wordmark is divided into two complementary expressions, each representing a different part of the building's story.
The word KUR is drawn as a custom monoline handwritten script, inspired by the gentle movement of the Adriatic breeze. Rather than representing water itself, the flowing strokes evoke air in motion—the invisible current that carries the freshness of the sea through Grottammare and into Palazzo Kursaal. Soft, continuous and human in character, the lettering introduces warmth, movement and life before transitioning into the more architectural second half of the wordmark.
In contrast, SAAL represents the building itself. Developed from the timeless proportions of Bauer Bodoni, the letterforms reflect the dignity and permanence of Palazzo Kursaal while drawing inspiration from the architectural evolution that has shaped its identity.
The composition pays homage to the elegance of the Belle Époque, the balance of Historicism, the layered character of Eclecticism, the flowing refinement of Italian Liberty (Art Nouveau), the confidence of Art Deco, and the considered restraint introduced during the building's 1950s reconstruction.
Rather than reproducing decorative architectural details, the typography translates the building's underlying design principles into letterform. Symmetry creates stability, rhythm establishes visual harmony, vertical proportions echo the building's monumentality, while restrained ornament ensures the identity remains timeless and quietly confident.
The defining feature of the concept lies within the custom AA. The two letters have been reimagined as the distinctive rectangular windows of Palazzo Kursaal. Their simplified architectural forms become visual openings through which the flowing movement of KUR appears to enter the hall. In this way, the typography tells a story without illustration. The sea breeze does not stop at the coastline—it passes through the windows, filling the hall with energy, conversation and life.
This gesture becomes both literal and metaphorical. Literally, the windows welcome the Adriatic breeze into the building. Metaphorically, they represent Andrea's ambition to reopen Palazzo Kursaal as Grottammare's welcoming living room—a place where fresh ideas, meaningful conversations, music, food, art and community naturally flow together under one roof.
The hall is no longer simply a historic landmark; it becomes a space animated by people once again.
The colour palette reinforces this narrative.Live Flame (#DA411E) becomes the primary brand colour, representing the heart of the culinary experience. Inspired by the glowing intensity of live-fire cooking, it symbolises warmth, passion and transformation. It reflects the flames that give character to every ingredient while expressing the energy, craftsmanship and human connection that define the Kursaal experience. Like the restaurant itself, the fire is not an end in itself—it is the catalyst that transforms simple ingredients into memorable moments shared around the table.
Supporting it is Soft Limestone (#EEE1D1), a warm neutral inspired by sunlit limestone, historic plaster walls and the natural materials found throughout Mediterranean architecture. Rather than a stark white, it introduces softness and authenticity, allowing the warmth of the fire to breathe while reflecting the timeless elegance of Palazzo Kursaal. It evokes daylight entering the hall, the gentle glow of coastal architecture, handcrafted materials and the quiet sophistication that defines Italian design.
Together, the identity expresses a building that has stood proudly for generations, yet continues to welcome new life with every passing breeze. It captures Andrea's ambition to honour the legacy of Palazzo Kursaal while transforming it into Grottammare's contemporary gathering place—where architecture frames the experience, the Adriatic provides its rhythm, live fire fuels its passion, and people remain at the heart of everything.
